September 12- Hilo

Today was the kickoff to the new NFL season. Strangely, football starts at 7:00 a.m. in Hawaii. (Note: Hawaii is 6 hours behind east coast time, 3 hours behind west coast time).

We flew to Hilo International Airport, located on the Big Island. Hilo is located on the windward (east) side of the Island. (Note: The north side of an island is considered windward too). This means its on the rainy side. [Note: Leeward (west or south) means its on the sunny side]. Don't let this dissuade you though. Being on the rainy side guarantees beautiful, lush, green tropical forests.

Regarding the rain, we only had 2 days (out of 7) in which the rain poured down all morning. Otherwise, it rained during the night and early morning hours. By mid-morning, the sun was out. The rain didn't impede our adventures at all.

We stayed in a cottage studio in Pahoa, a town located about 30 minutes south of Hilo. I found the listing on Craigslist. See http://www.freewebs.com/punapisces/index.htm. The owner, Connie, was a wonderful host. We immediately felt at home, having been greeted by Simon, Connie's cat. Simon was a frequently welcomed visitor during our stay.

It's important to note that the Coqui frogs croak very loudly during the night on the Big Island. It didn't take long to get used to though. We noticed that they croaked louder when it was wet outside. For a sampling of their sound, go to http://ltmtnele.tripod.com/elyunque/id7.html. These frogs have overrun the island; to the delight of some, and to the dismay of others.

Also be prepared to awaken to cock-a-doodle-doo, as roosters and hens rule the roost.
